GROSSE POINTE SHORES IMPROVEMENT FOUNDATION
TREE PLANTING PROGRAM
Dear Resident:
The members of both the Grosse Pointe Shores Improvement Foundation Tree Committee and Village of Grosse Pointe Shores Tree Board are responsible to locate areas throughout the Village that would benefit from the planting of a tree or trees.
The trees they plant have trunks about 2 to 2.5 inches in diameter and range from 8 to 12 feet tall. They select the species with the goal of promoting diversity and aesthetics. Availability is a factor, as well. Trees are valued at approximately $350 each with the cost borne by donations to the GPSIF and, on occasion, by grants. The best part of this program is there is no cost to the homeowner.
Planting usually occurs in November or December. Prior to planting, stakes identifying the species are placed at the exact planting location. The contractor then plants, stakes and mulches the trees. All excess soil is removed. Care is taken to avoid damage to sod or sprinklers. In the unlikely event damage does occur, the problem is corrected. Thereafter, the tree is inspected several times and stakes are removed the next fall. The tree is warranted for one year. If it is unhealthy, it is immediately removed and replaced during the next planting season.
It is a proven fact that a healthy forest improves the quality of life of a community and has a positive effect on property values. If you are interested in participating in the tree planting program, please contact the administrative office at (313)881-6565.
